ZHAW offers a cutting-edge CAS in Blockchain & Decentralized Finance
Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and Decentralized Finance (DeFi) are transforming the financial industry at an unprecedented pace. As these technologies gain mainstream adoption, financial professionals must equip themselves with the expertise to navigate this evolving landscape.
To meet this demand, ZHAW now offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Blockchain & Decentralized Finance. This program is designed for decision-makers in finance, experienced business and IT project leaders, investment professionals, and entrepreneurs looking to develop innovative business models based on blockchain technology. It provides a deep dive into blockchain fundamentals, DeFi applications, investment strategies, and risk analysis—empowering participants to make informed decisions in this rapidly changing field.
We spoke with Florian Spychiger, Research Associate DAOS & Blockchain at ZHAW, to gain deeper insights into this innovative program.
Since when does this CAS exist?
Florian Spychiger: The CAS will be conducted for the first time this spring, but the course has been in development for two years.
Why did ZHAW decide to offer these courses?
Florian Spychiger: There are several reasons why ZHAW decided to offer this education course. First, it’s a highly relevant and current topic, especially for the finance industry. ZHAW wants to empower participants with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the promising and evolving Web3 technologies like blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and decentralized finance (DeFi). Additionally, topics such as DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations), Metaverse, and DeFi are active research fields at ZHAW, which underscores our expertise and relevance in these areas.
What role do the Metaverse and virtual worlds play in these programs?
Florian Spychiger: The Metaverse plays a central role as it brings together a variety of Web3 technologies like NFTs, DAOs, and tokens. These technologies are not just theoretical, but they also have practical implications for our digital future.
I also teach a bachelor’s module on blockchain technology, where the Metaverse is an important part of the curriculum. As our lives become increasingly digital, the Metaverse – in whatever form it may take – seems to be a logical next step. It is an essential part of education in this field.
Are there any Master’s theses at ZHAW on the topic of the Metaverse?
Florian Spychiger: There certainly are, but I’m not familiar with all of them in detail, as not all works are publicly accessible. However, there are many exciting approaches and topics being explored in this area. Here is an example of a bachelor’s thesis related to the Metaverse: Bachelor’s Thesis on Blockchain and the Metaverse
